Dodge Ram MI Automaker Chrysler Recalling 144,000 Vehicles in Three Separate Recalls

Chrysler is not facing only one recall, which includes Dodge Ram MI vehicles and Dodge Journey models, but three different recalls at the same time. Also, General Motors is dealing with a recall of Cadillac CTS models.
Dodge Ram MI automaker Chrysler has to recall 144,065 vehicles for three separate problems on three different models. The vehicles with possible defects are as follows:

  • 22,274                  2008 – 2011 Dodge Ram 4500 & 5500
  • 56,611                  2011 Dodge Ram 1500
  • 65,180                  2009 Dodge Journey

The first recall for the 4500 and 5500 is due to a possible weakening and fracturing of the left ball stud on the tie rod of the steering column which could cause loss of steering control of the vehicle. From August 2007 to December 2010 about 86 owners complained about this problem. After an investigation and a completed trial of a possible solution to the problem, Chrysler decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. Chrysler dealers will replace the outer tier rod for free to fix the defect.
At the beginning of December, the new model Dodge Ram 1500 was reported to have axle noise and bearing failure. On Dec. 3, holds were placed on the shipments of the trucks to confirm the problem before any more new models made it out into the market. The rear axle bearing can eventually seize from grinding. If the bearing seizes, it could cause the vehicle to stall while in motion and crash. The lubrication oil in the rear axle needs to be changed to a larger oz. of fluid to correct the problem.
Research for the third recall began in March 2010 by Chrysler’s Vehicle Safety Office because there was elevated data to support an occurring problem with the air bag warning lamp illuminating. The wires that are in the front door wire harness may wear and break. This would cause the side impact sensor signals to be interrupted, which could cause the air bag to not deploy during a crash. Replacement of the left and right door harnesses is needed if this problem is occurring.
All of the Dodge Ram MI vehicles and the Journey vehicles have been reported to have not had any injuries or accidents. For any owners who need have more questions can contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403.
At the same time, General Motors is facing a recall of 95,927 Cadillac CTS vehicles ranging from 2005 to 2007. Some of these vehicles have a problem which causes the front passenger seat to kink, bend or fold due to continuous use and flexing. If this occurs, it is possible the connections in the mat to the sensor, that detects if a passenger is present, may stop working. This would cause the air bag to be disabled and not deploy if there was an accident.
General Motors dealerships are ready to replace the passenger sensing system at no cost to the owner. Any questions can be answered by calling Cadillac at 866-982-2339.
